Practical Tips to Put a Baby to Sleep
It is to be expected that newborn babies have short sleep naps around the clock because they cannot yet distinguish between day and night, however, is a few weeks time, they will eventually fall into the right sleeping pattern as the mother guides her baby to sleep more during night time. The following are practical ways to help mothers regularize the sleep patterns of their babies.
Pacifiers are commonly used to calm babies down so they can sleep well and not be agitated by a sudden sound when they are asleep, but the problem lies when the pacifier suddenly is released by the baby and falls off during his sleep time, which can result into the baby screaming and waking up; therefore, a mother should look for an alternative way for her baby to continue with his sleep without using a pacifier and this refers to weaning the baby from pacifier dependency over the next six to eight months until such time that her baby can stand alone to sleep well without it.
Adjust temperature of the room during sleep time
Because babies have very sensitive and receptive skin, they easily will react to changes in temperature; therefore, to make the baby sleep well, always check and adjust the temperature of the room such that it isn’t too cold or too hot and cover the baby with a blanket during the night when needed.
Use relaxing sound
Babies are not only sensitive to temperature changes, but they can be sensitive to noise or loud sounds, as well, therefore, there’s another effective way to put a baby to sleep, which is to use a white noise machine, a sleep-aid and nap machine that produces soothing sounds, like relaxing music, sound of rain, wind, ocean waves and which can mask the other sounds in the room, allowing the baby to doze off soundly.
When a baby is full, just like adults, they will likely fall to sleep early during bedtime; therefore, a mother must see to it that her baby is fed well during dinner time so the baby won’t feel hungry during his period of sleep and just be alert to prepare a fresh bottle of milk or nurse the baby with mother’s milk, just in case, he will be hungry during the early dawn.
Darkness activates the brain to release melatonin, which is a sleep hormone, that’s why people can easily fall off to sleep when lights are put off and when it comes to putting the baby to sleep, here are ways to regulate the light in the room: install dimmers on the lights in the baby’s room and set the right mood by putting these on before bedtime; if the baby wakes up during the night, don’t turn on the lights but, instead, bring the baby into the brightly lit area and soothing him back to sleep; during daytime, when a baby has to take a nap, consider installing a room shade so the baby can easily doze off.
